Irish mythology
Origin of word - Éire
Although the origins of the name Éire are uncertain, Eiru is the name of a mythological divine heroine who helped the Gaels conquer Ireland as described in the Book of Invasions.
The modern word Ireland derives from a combination of the Gaelic "Éire" with the Germanic word "land"
Origin of the Celtic Symbols on Éireman Logos
n Celtic- Irish mythology, the Tuatha Dé Danann which translates to (People of the goddess Danu) are a semi-divine Irish race of gods. It’s believed that they were founded by the goddess Danu. The Tuatha Dé Dananns were known as a race of heroes who originally occupied Islands off the west coast of Ireland. They were renouned for their skills in magic, poetry, art and science.
They travelled widely on the continent and from each of the cities they brought back treasure. One of the treasures which they brought back to Ireland was the Stone of Destiny called the Lia Fail which they placed on the mound of Tara. Hence forth the rightful kings of Ireland were chosen when it called out their names. Another one of the treasures they brought to Ireland was the Lightning Spear called the Gáe Assail which ensured victory to whoever had it in their possession, as it would return to the hand of the warrior who threw it.
Upon arrival back to Ireland the Tuatha Dé Danann fought and won a battle against Firbolg
at the first battle of Mag Tuireadh. In the second battle of Mag Tuireadh, this time against the Fomorians, who were a group of Giants who lived on the Island of Ireland, the Tuatha Dé Danann were again victorious.
Stories of their fabulous deeds and gallant victories were written after Christianity was established in Ireland. Before these recordings Tuatha Dé Danann were regarded as Gods to the Celtic people. Mounds in historical sites such as Newgrange are thought to represent their passing to another world.
Lia Fail
Lia Fail or "Stone of Destiny" was a treasure of the Tuatha De Danann brought back from their adventures abroad. Legend has it that the stone would announce the true Éireman when he stood beside it.
Gáe Assail
The Gáe Assail or "Lightning Spear" held by Éireman (below) was another treasure of the the Tuatha De Danan. The spear was used by Lugh against the Fomorians in the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh.
The Tri Spiral
The tri-spiral design is probably the most famous Irish Megalithic symbol.
The design is often called a triple spiral; however archaeologists call it the three-spiral stone.
The tri-spiral is often referred to as a Celtic design, however it was carved about 2500 years before the Celts reached Ireland. Perhaps by the Tuatha Dé Danann themselves...?
The Éireman Winner
There will be a special ceremony at the Finish line for the Éireman Winner. They will be crowned at the finish line through Lia Fail or "Stone of Destiny" and receive the Gáe Assail or "Lightning Spear".
